blockleft  Broadband users reach their limit - (8 reads) blockright
One million UK consumers have exceeded or come close to exceeding their broadband usage limit, research from consumer group uSwitch has found. So-called usage caps, where internet service providers limit the amount of bandwidth users can have in any given month, are standard practice. But the majority of users are still confused by the bandwidth curbs imposed on them, the research found. For some who go over their limit the penalty is disconnection. "With so much reliance on broadband, having the service disconnected could feel to someone as serious as having their electricity cut off," said Tim Wolfenden, spokesman for uSwitch. blockleft  Microsoft, Xbox key in missing child case - (5 reads) blockright
Microsoft has become involved in the search for Brandon Crisp, a 15 year old from Barrie, Ontario, about 100 km north of Toronto. The company, which runs the Xbox Live service, has increased the reward amount for helping to find Brandon to $50,000, according to the CBC. They also said that they were open to the idea of getting information from the Xbox itself. Brandon went missing over the Canadian thanksgiving weekend, on October 13. His parents have said he became addicted to "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare", and threatened to take his Xbox away. The child fled the home, and hasn't been seen since. Brandon had also become involved in "teams" that competed on Live, which the parents say "gave him a new identity", and taking the Xbox away "stole that identity from him", which they believe is the root cause behind him running away. Their largest worry at this point is that he's being held against his will, possibly by someone who he met through Microsoft's Xbox Live service. Microsoft is assisting to the best of their ability in the search, even breaking their privacy policy to try and find who may be responsible for the missing boy. Police are analyzing both Brandon's laptop and Xbox hard drive to try and find a new clue that could lead to a breakthrough in the search. Several of his belongings, including his bike, have been found abandoned in the area of his home, leading both his parents and police to believe mischief may be behind his disappearance. blockleft  ((Hot)) Woman in jail over virtual murder - (12 reads) blockright
A woman has been arrested in Japan after she allegedly killed her virtual husband in a popular video game. The 43-year-old was reportedly furious at finding herself suddenly divorced in the online game Maplestory. Police say she illegally accessed log-in details of the man playing her husband, and killed off his character. The woman, a piano teacher, is in jail in Sapporo waiting to learn if she faces charges of illegally accessing a computer and manipulating data. She was arrested on Wednesday and taken 620 miles (1,000 km) from her home in southern Miyazaki to Sapporo - where her "husband", a 33-year-old office worker lives. If charged with the offences, and convicted, she faces up to five years in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. A Sapporo police official, according to the Associated Press news agency, said the woman had used the man's ID and password to log in to the game last May to carry out the virtual murder. "I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry," she was quoted by the official as telling investigators. Maplestory is a Korean-made game, which has grown in popularity around the world but has a strong fan base in the Far East. The game centres on defeating monsters, but players can also engage in social activities and relationships - including marriages - through their digital characters, called avatars. blockleft  Google Earth comes to the iPhone - (4 reads) blockright
No doubt many of you have frittered away several hours through the sheer exploration possibilities offered by the Google Earth program. Perhaps some of you may even have wished you could have this little application everywhere you go. If so, then you're in luck: in a posting on Google's LatLong blog, Product Manager Peter Birch announced that the Google Earth application is making its debut in the iTunes App Store today (available here). According to Mr. Birch, the iPhone's touch interface provides a very natural way for to interact with the interface. Swiping your fingers will move the map around, while pinching in and out controls the zoom. Using the iPhone's GPS, users can instantly go to their current location in the application. In addition, Panoramio integration allows users access to over eight million user submitted photos of locations. Google news

blockleft  Microsoft *beep* patent - (9 reads) blockright
Those b#$*@*%s at Microsoft got another patent. This time it's a patent for blocking out or bleeping words in an audio stream. In the patent description the company notes that "The censored speech can either be stored or made available to an audience in real-time." Originally filed 4 years ago the company only had the patent approved last week. It's expected Microsoft will use the technology in upcoming versions of Xbox Live where it can filter bad words that people use on its network. news.com suggests that the technology could be used for more than just censoring profanity, suggesting that perhaps China or another government would want it employed for other phrases, such as Tibet or free speech.
